Some confusion has developed from the ‘Religious Liberty Commission’ report, as it does make reference to the now famous Johnson Amendment. This is a law in the US that helps with the separation of the powers of the Church and State. Effectively the Johnston Amendment prohibits organizations and Churches with charitable status from making donations to political interests and or also promoting a one sided political view.
What has happened to bring about the confusion is recently a final draft report of the Religious Liberty Commission, that was commissioned by the president, was delivered to his desk with a lot of fanfare. In this report is the recommendation that the Johnson Amendment should be repealed. The key here is that as a recommendation it is not law, and would need to pass through the house, senate and finally be signed off by the President to become law.
So although not law it does highlight a growing interest within the US Government to reduce the power of the separation of Church and State.
As Seventh day Adventists we know that this will eventually come to pass, and as a result America with become like the persecuting powers of the Middle Ages, and as Revelation 13 tells us, they will pass a law that none will be able to buy or sell unless they receive the Mark of the Beast. Let us all use this time to get to know our Lord and Saviour Jesus, as He is the Way the Truth and the LIfe.
