By what authority doest thou these things,

and who gave thee this authority?” Matthew 21:23

Matthew 21:23 shows the conflict between the authority of the Word, and the authority of the Church. No Bible student would question that Christ was the Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory...” John 1:14. The only reason the Church exists was and is to preach the Word of God. Ideally, the obedient Church should be in harmony and subservient to the Word of God. The Word was the vine and the Churches were the branches. The unfruitful branches were eventually cut off (John 15:1-3).

I was in Australia for the printing of Newspapers three weeks ago. While there, several friends told me that they had received advanced light on the Godhead. I kept my unde r s t andings on thi s controversial issues to myself at the time. We can believe and preach whatever we like, and are only answerable to God, not man. As Protestants, however, our beliefs should be constrained to within the pages of the Bible, which we know is in harmony with itself, for God is not the author of confusion. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” 1 Corinthians 14:33. The Holy Spirit has inspired every one of the 40 prophets who wrote the Bible. “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripure is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:20-21. Consequently, this confusion cannot be blamed on God, for His Word is perfect. “The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” Psalms 12:6. The problem lies in man's interpretation of the Bible. Both parties are quite sure they are right, but unfortunately both are not right. We are told in John 7:17. “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, orwhether I speak of myself.”
